Found a woodworking plan, furniture design or DIY tutorial from the USA that specifies MDF in inches? The good news is that the MDF itself is broadly the same type of engineered wood product. The confusing part is the way it is sized, graded, tested and described.
This guide explains the differences between US and UK MDF in plain English, including thickness conversion, standards, moisture resistance, formaldehyde requirements, density and when you should or should not treat two boards as equivalent.

MDF stands for Medium Density Fibreboard. In both the UK and USA it is manufactured by breaking wood into fibres, combining those fibres with resin and pressing them into a dense, uniform panel.
The important differences are mainly in the standards used to specify the board, the thicknesses it is sold in, performance classifications and formaldehyde certification requirements.
American woodworking plans often use fractions of an inch. UK MDF is normally sold in millimetres. Use the guide below to find the closest commonly available UK thickness.

This is where the comparison becomes more technical.
In the USA, MDF is covered by ANSI A208.2. The US also has federal requirements governing formaldehyde emissions from MDF and other composite wood products under TSCA Title VI. The US Environmental Protection Agency confirms that MDF, including thin MDF, is covered by these requirements.
In the UK and Europe, MDF falls within the EN 622 series, with EN 622-5 covering dry-process fibreboards including MDF.

MDF is not defined simply by thickness. Density can vary between products and manufacturers.
This matters because density affects things such as weight, machining behaviour, screw holding and how the board responds when routed or profiled.
Therefore, an 18mm US MDF board and an 18mm UK MDF board could behave slightly differently even though they have the same nominal thickness.
MDF can be manufactured for different performance requirements. Strength is influenced by fibre quality, density, resin system, manufacturing process and the grade of board.
This is why you should not assume that simply matching the thickness makes two boards structurally equivalent.
Both US and UK MDF can provide a very smooth, uniform surface suitable for painting, veneering, laminating, routing and CNC machining.
Surface quality is more dependent on the specific manufacturer and grade than whether the MDF was produced in Britain or America.
For normal woodworking, the difference can be surprisingly small.
Both types can generally be cut, routed, drilled and machined using appropriate woodworking tools. However, differences in density and resin content can affect tool wear, dust production and edge quality.

In the UK, moisture-resistant MDF is commonly used in kitchens, bathrooms, utility rooms and other internal areas where humidity is higher than normal. European MDF classifications distinguish boards intended for different conditions of use.
For example, MDF.H is associated with general-purpose MDF intended for use in humid conditions. The exact classification should always be confirmed against the manufacturer's technical documentation.

Formaldehyde emissions are another area where the terminology can become confusing.
US MDF is regulated under TSCA Title VI. The EPA specifies an emission limit for MDF of 0.11 ppm, with thin MDF having a separate limit of 0.13 ppm. US manufacturers also have third-party certification and labelling requirements under the regulation.
The important point is that TSCA Title VI is a US regulatory system. It should not simply be treated as another name for a European MDF emission class.
If you are buying MDF for a UK project, look at the actual manufacturer's declaration and certification rather than trying to translate a US certification into a UK one-to-one equivalent.

If an American furniture plan specifies 3/4" MDF, using good-quality 18mm MDF in the UK will normally be the sensible choice.
If the project specifies 1/2" MDF, 12mm is normally the nearest readily available UK thickness.
However, don't substitute purely based on thickness when the MDF has a specific performance requirement.
