The terminology surrounding fire-performance plywood can be confusing. Fire rated, fire retardant and fire resistant are not interchangeable technical descriptions. The relevant product classification, test evidence and field of application should be checked before specifying plywood for a fire-sensitive application.

Fire Rated vs Fire Resistant vs Fire Retardant

These three terms are frequently used when discussing fire-performance timber products, but they describe different concepts. Use the comparison below as a starting point rather than relying on the terminology alone.

Fire Rated

A broad commercial term generally used for a product with a declared or tested fire-performance classification. The words "fire rated" alone do not identify the actual classification.

Fire Retardant

Describes a material that has been manufactured or treated to reduce its contribution to fire. Treatment may influence ignition, flame spread or other reaction-to-fire characteristics.

Fire Resistant

Usually relates to the performance of a complete building element or construction assembly when exposed to fire, including criteria such as integrity, insulation and loadbearing capacity where applicable.

Technical Difference Explained

🔥 Reaction to Fire: BS EN 13501-1

For many construction products, fire performance is expressed using the European reaction-to-fire classification system in BS EN 13501-1.

The principal classifications run from A1 through F, with A1 representing the highest reaction-to-fire performance within the classification system and F representing the lowest classification.

⚠ Important: The classification of an individual plywood product must come from the relevant manufacturer's technical documentation and test evidence. Do not assume that all plywood described as "fire rated" has the same Euroclass classification.

Understanding B-s1,d0

Fire classifications can contain more information than the principal letter classification. A commonly encountered format is:

Why the Installation Configuration Matters

A reaction-to-fire classification is not necessarily an intrinsic property that can be transferred to every possible installation of a material.

The UK's Approved Document B fire-safety guidance states that reaction-to-fire performance can depend on the system tested and its configuration.

🔩 Fixing Fixing and mounting methods can form part of the tested configuration.

Fire Performance Terminology

Reaction to Fire

Reaction to fire describes how a construction product contributes to fire development. It can include factors such as ignition, flame spread, heat release, smoke production and flaming droplets or particles.

For relevant construction applications in England, the BS EN 13501-1 classification system is used within the current Approved Document B framework.

Fire Resistance

Fire resistance is concerned with the ability of a building element or construction assembly to maintain specified performance during fire exposure for a defined period.

Depending on the construction, this can involve criteria such as:

  • Integrity — resistance to the passage of flames and hot gases.
  • Insulation — limiting temperature rise on the unexposed side.
  • Loadbearing capacity — where applicable to the structural element.

A plywood sheet having a reaction-to-fire classification does not, by itself, establish a 30, 60 or 90 minute fire-resistance period for a wall, floor, ceiling or partition.

Fire Retardant Treatment

Fire retardant treatment is used to modify the fire behaviour of timber-based products. Depending on the treatment and product construction, it may improve the reaction-to-fire performance.

Treatment does not make plywood non-combustible. Where a classification depends on a coating or treatment, the maintenance and application requirements associated with that system should also be considered.

Fire Rated Plywood: What Should You Check?

When specifying fire-performance plywood, the product description should be only the starting point. The technical documentation is more important than the marketing terminology.

✓ Thickness Confirm the tested thickness range.

🔥 Fire Rated Plywood Does Not Mean Fireproof

Plywood is a timber-based material. Even where it has been treated or manufactured to achieve an improved reaction-to-fire classification, it should not be described as fireproof or non-combustible unless the applicable evidence specifically supports such a classification.

Fire retardant treatment can alter the way a timber-based product behaves when exposed to fire, but treatment does not remove the fundamental distinction between a combustible timber product and a non-combustible construction material.

Fire Rated Plywood FAQs

Is fire rated plywood fireproof?

No. Fire rated plywood should not automatically be described as fireproof. Plywood is a timber-based material and its fire performance should be described using the relevant tested and declared classification.

Is fire retardant plywood the same as fire rated plywood?

Not necessarily. Fire retardant generally describes a treatment or characteristic intended to reduce the material's contribution to fire. Fire rated is a broader commercial description that should be supported by specific technical evidence.

Is fire resistant plywood the same as fire rated plywood?

B-s1,d0 is a reaction-to-fire classification format.

Does B-s1,d0 mean a wall is fire resistant?

Can fire rated plywood be used in walls and ceilings?

Potentially, provided the product's documented classification, thickness, fixing arrangement, substrate and field of application are appropriate for the intended construction.

Can fire rated plywood be used to achieve a 30 or 60 minute fire rating?

Not solely because the plywood has a reaction-to-fire classification. A 30, 60 or 90 minute fire-resistance claim normally requires evidence for the relevant construction assembly and its required performance criteria.

Does fire retardant treatment make plywood non-combustible?

Why does plywood thickness matter for fire classification?
