What Is Planed Timber?

Planed timber is timber that has been mechanically machined to produce a smoother surface and more consistent edges. The planing process removes some material from the original section, which means the finished timber dimensions are smaller than the nominal size.

Planed softwood timber is widely used for internal carpentry, joinery, shelving, furniture, storage projects, decorative timberwork and general DIY. The smoother machined surface makes it particularly useful where the timber will remain visible or where a cleaner finish is preferred.

Planed timber can be cut, drilled, screwed, glued, sanded and finished using suitable woodworking tools and products.

What Is Planed Timber Used For?

Planed softwood timber is a versatile material for carpentry, joinery, woodworking and DIY. The smoother machined surface makes it particularly useful for projects where the timber will remain visible or where a cleaner finished appearance is required.

Planed Timber vs Sawn Timber

The main difference between planed and sawn timber is the way the timber has been machined and the resulting surface finish. Sawn timber generally retains a rougher surface, while planed timber has been machined to provide smoother faces and more consistent edges.

Nominal Timber Size vs Finished Timber Size

One of the most important things to understand when buying planed timber is the difference between the nominal size and the finished size.

Traditional timber sizes such as 2x4, 3x2 and 2x2 are commonly used when describing timber. These dimensions refer to the nominal section rather than necessarily representing the exact dimensions of the finished product.

Planing removes material from the timber. For example, a nominal 50 x 100mm section may have a finished size of approximately 44 x 94mm.

If the timber needs to fit an existing opening, frame, shelf, bracket or other accurately measured component, always work from the finished dimensions stated on the individual product page.

How to Choose the Right Planed Timber

Choosing planed timber is not simply a case of selecting the nearest traditional imperial size. Consider the finished dimensions, length, timber specification and intended application.

Can Planed Timber Be Painted or Stained?

Yes. Planed timber can be sanded and finished with suitable paint, stain, varnish, oil or other timber finishing products. The smoother machined surface can provide a good starting point for decorating, although the amount of preparation required will depend on the timber and the finish being applied.

For visible timberwork, always consider the natural characteristics of softwood, including knots, grain variation and movement. A suitable preparation and finishing system can help produce a more consistent result.

Is Planed Timber Suitable for Outdoor Use?

Not all planed timber is suitable for prolonged outdoor exposure. Suitability depends on the timber species, treatment, grade and intended application.

If your project is outdoors or exposed to weather, check that the particular timber product is suitable for the environment and consider whether treated timber is required.
