What Is MDF?

MDF stands for Medium Density Fibreboard. It is an engineered wood-based sheet material manufactured from refined wood fibres combined with resin and compressed under heat and pressure.

The result is a consistent board with a smooth surface and uniform structure. MDF is widely used for furniture, cabinets, shelving, decorative panels, shopfitting and internal joinery because it can be accurately cut, drilled, routed and painted.

The best MDF thickness and specification depends on the application, support, expected loading and environment in which the board will be used.

Choose the Right Type of MDF

Standard MDF is suitable for many dry interior applications. Where the environment or project specification requires different performance, specialist MDF may be more appropriate.

Standard MDF

A smooth, consistent board for furniture, cabinetry, shelving, wardrobes, decorative panels and general internal joinery.

Moisture Resistant MDF

Manufactured for suitable interior environments where increased resistance to humid conditions is required. It is not waterproof and should not be treated as suitable for permanent water exposure.

Fire Rated MDF

Specialist MDF for applications where a specified fire performance is required. Always check the exact product classification and technical documentation before specifying the board.

Which MDF Should I Use?

Furniture & cabinetry:
Standard MDF is widely used for furniture and cabinet components. 12mm, 15mm and 18mm are common starting points, although the correct thickness depends on the construction and design.
Shelving:
MDF can be suitable for shelving when the thickness, span, support and expected load are appropriate. Longer spans or heavier loads may require additional support or a different sheet material.
Panelling:
MDF is commonly used for internal decorative wall panels and feature walls. Thinner boards can be useful where a lightweight decorative panel is required.
Humid interiors:
Moisture resistant MDF may be more appropriate where increased resistance to humidity is required. It is not waterproof and should only be used within the conditions specified by the manufacturer.
Fire performance:
Where fire performance is part of the specification, use a suitable fire rated MDF product and check the manufacturer's classification and technical documentation for the intended application.

MDF Sheet Sizes

MDF is available in a variety of sheet dimensions. The familiar full sheet format is 2440 x 1220mm, commonly referred to as 8 x 4ft MDF. Smaller sheets can be useful where handling, transport or material waste is a consideration.

MDF vs Plywood

MDF and plywood are both widely used sheet materials, but they have different characteristics. MDF offers a smooth and consistent surface and is particularly useful for painting, routing and internal furniture. Plywood can be preferable where weight, strength, screw holding or resistance to demanding conditions is a greater consideration.

MDF may be the better choice when:

  • A smooth, consistent surface is required.
  • The board will be painted or decorated.
  • Routing or profiling is required.
  • You are making internal furniture or cabinetry.
  • Consistent board density is useful.

Plywood may be preferable when:

  • Strength-to-weight ratio is important.
  • Lower weight is required.
  • Screw holding is a major consideration.
  • The application is more demanding.
  • A plywood construction is specifically required.
