What is Buffalo Board?

Buffalo Board is a commonly used term for phenolic faced plywood with a textured or mesh patterned surface. The plywood core provides the main panel structure while the phenolic film creates a finished face with additional surface grip.

This combination makes Buffalo Board a popular choice for trailer flooring, vehicle flooring, loading ramps, platforms, walkways and other working surfaces.

Textured anti slip surface

The mesh patterned phenolic face provides additional grip compared with conventional smooth plywood. This makes it particularly useful for trailer floors and vehicle flooring where surface grip is an important consideration.

Phenolic faced plywood

The phenolic film provides a practical finished surface for applications involving regular use, dirt and moisture. Exposed cut edges should be considered separately when planning installation.

Available in 9mm, 12mm and 18mm

We stock Buffalo Board in three common thicknesses. The appropriate thickness depends on the trailer construction, support spacing, expected loading and fixing method.

What is trailer flooring plywood used for?

Anti slip plywood is used across transport, construction, commercial and workshop applications. Buffalo Board is particularly useful where a textured phenolic surface is preferred over conventional smooth plywood.

Trailer flooring plywood sheet sizes

Standard full sheets of Buffalo Board are approximately 2440mm x 1220mm (8ft x 4ft), providing approximately 2.98m² of board area.

Smaller panel sizes are also available across selected products. These can be useful when repairing part of an existing trailer floor or where using a full sheet would result in unnecessary cutting waste.

When replacing an existing trailer floor, measure the actual floor dimensions rather than assuming the original sheet size. Remember to allow for supporting members, joints, fixing points and openings.

Buffalo Board vs standard plywood

The best plywood for a trailer floor depends on how the surface will be used. Buffalo Board is primarily selected for its textured phenolic face, while conventional plywood may be more appropriate where a smooth face or a different plywood specification is required.

Buffalo Board or Heksa Plus Hex?

Our trailer flooring range also includes Heksa Plus Hex, another type of phenolic anti slip plywood.

The main difference is the surface pattern. Buffalo Board has a mesh-style patterned face, while Heksa Plus Hex has a distinctive hexagonal patterned surface.

Both types can be considered for trailer flooring, vehicle flooring, platforms and suitable ramp applications. The appropriate product and thickness should be selected according to the individual application.

Installing Buffalo Board trailer flooring

A trailer floor depends on more than the plywood itself. The supporting frame, board thickness, support spacing, fixing method and expected loading should all be considered before installation.

Check the trailer frame

Check that the chassis, cross members and supporting framework are sound before installing replacement flooring.

Measure the existing floor

Measure the length and width carefully and identify irregular areas, cross members, fixing holes and openings.

Plan the sheet layout

Plan the layout before cutting. Try to minimise unnecessary joints while ensuring that board edges are properly supported.

Protect exposed edges

The phenolic film provides a finished face, but cut plywood edges remain exposed. Where appropriate, exposed edges should be protected for the intended application.

Use suitable fixings

The fixing method should be appropriate for the trailer construction and supporting framework. Make sure the board is adequately supported and securely fixed.

What to check before buying trailer flooring plywood

• Measure the actual trailer floor dimensions.
• Check the spacing and condition of the supporting framework.
• Consider the expected load and how the trailer will be used.
• Choose an appropriate plywood thickness.
• Check whether a textured anti slip surface is required.
• Allow for cutting waste when calculating the number of sheets required.
• Consider how exposed plywood edges and fixing points will be protected.
• Check the trailer manufacturer's requirements before replacing structural or load-bearing flooring.

Buffalo Board for van and vehicle flooring

Phenolic faced plywood is also commonly considered for van and commercial vehicle flooring. The textured surface can provide additional grip while the plywood core provides a solid base for storage systems, equipment and vehicle fittings.

Where vehicle weight is important, a thinner plywood may be preferable to a heavier flooring board. The correct material depends on whether the board is being used as a floor, wall lining, partition, storage base or equipment platform.
